Valerian Root Herbal Sedative

This week we're looking at Nature's Way Valerian Root, an herbal remedy promoted as a nonaddictive sleep aid and a sedative.

  • Ingredients: Valerian root comes from a European wildflower.

  • Price: $6.25 for 100 capsules, about a 33-day supply.

  • Other Sources: Solaray, Sundown, Country Life, numerous others. Available in most vitamin or health-food stores.

  • How It Works: Valerian root appears to contain some chemicals that may bind weakly to the same brain receptors that conventional sedatives do, producing a milder effect.

  • Scientific Evidence: Promising but still not well documented. Two fairly scientific but small studies have indicated that valerian root may help people get to sleep and improve the quality of their sleep. But other studies are less conclusive.

  • Dangers: Valerian can cause allergic reactions and also act as a stimulant in some people. Chronic use or overdose can cause headache, insomnia, nausea, excitability and irregular heartbeat. High doses may cause liver damage. Because of the risk of drowsiness you should not operate machinery or drive your car after taking valerian. Nor should you use it when drinking alcohol or taking narcotics, sedatives or Antabuse. Some studies indicate valerian root could pose a risk to a fetus, so pregnant women should avoid it. It has not been studied for safety in children. Those with liver disease should probably avoid it.

  • Bottom Line: Proceed with caution. If you occasionally need help getting to sleep, are careful to follow dosage instructions, and don't have any risk factors, valerian might work. On the other hand, there are sleep remedies on the market that have more solid science behind them and don't carry the risk of liver damage. And if you use a sedative all the time you might want to wait until there is better evidence for this one and a better understanding of potential long-term risks.

Also notice the prominent ice caps. As we all know, water is the main precursor to all biological weapons. Experts in extraterrestrial weapons systems tell us that the ruddy complexion of Mars is due to its high iron content. This iron can be made in to steel for the production of everything from small weapons, to medium-sized weapons, to very large weapons. • Re: bears-dtv - Yes, it appears my planets are aligning once more as AVID is now in reshorting territory. It actually exceeded my linear trendline by .50 yesterday. All the technicals I follow (you know, "voodoo") on AVID are still very weak. TSV, MS, MACD, BOP, Wilders RSI, Stochastics, etc. all show more distribution. The rubber band effect (quick snapback) has placed its price just under the 21 DMA. As long as it holds under that and the downtrending average is intact, we should see further price erosion. As far as the general markets are concerned, I believe the last two days of price action was a similar movement from an oversold condition combined with short covering. I actually covered a lot of my shorts 3 days ago prior to this movement and added 7 new shorts at the peak yesterday in the market. I will be adding AVID today if it holds or rises on the open. It is an artificial hippocampus which is a region of neurons that co-ordinates memory storage. Scientists in California will connect the device to tissue in the preserved brains of dead lab rats. Ultimately the team hopes to carry out human trials involving patients who have suffered brain damage due to stroke, epilepsy or Alzheimer's disease. The way the hippocampus works has been copied onto a silicon chip which is then implanted. It communicates with the brain through electrodes placed on either side of the damaged area. Theodore Berger, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, who heads the research, sees it as a test case. "If you can't do it with the hippocampus you can't do it with anything," he said. The hippocampus is an area at the base of the brain in humans, close to the junction with the spinal cord. I don't believe they are Wel insiders as the story implied, but a few guys that figured out the future then came up with a scheme to extort money out of Wel by loaning them money in a time of need. Wel took the loan in December, then Checkpoint almost imediately declaired Wel in default probably due to fine print in the contract. • Thanks - Orlando Update - Charon, Ledtheherd, Bopper, Companydoc and others: thanks for the recognition of my post. I am simply a trapped long who hopes to realize a return on my investment. I post only to express my opinion on Scrushy's management and decision making idiosyncrasies, and his seemingly continuous failure to accept responsibilities for his actions/inactions. But, as documented in some of my previous posts I hold the BOD responsible for EVERYTHING that has happened to this company. For it was on their watch all of this unfolded and NOT ONE OF THEM did a thing about it! I believe that every vote counts and I will certainly be casting mine for members that are willing to make the right decisions, at the right time, for the right reasons. Now for an Orlando update (as told to me by some who are there): Scrushy basically gave the same speech he's given for the past several years. Vitamin E >Fights Bladder Cancer - Feb. 28 -- Vitamin E supplements are believed to reduce the risk of bladder cancer mortality, according to a study conducted by the American Cancer Society. Antioxidants such as Vitamin E have long been recognized as fighting off free radicals, which are molecules associated with aging and certain diseases, including cancer. In Atlanta, Ga., a team of nine researchers examined the association between use of Vitamin E supplements and bladder cancer deaths. Health records of almost one million adults were studied for a 16-year period. Bladder cancer deaths occurred in men almost three times more than in women. Regular use of Vitamin E in supplement form over a period of years, however, was associated with a reduced risk of bladder cancer mortality, the study showed. The strongest evidence came from test patients who consumed Vitamin E supplements for a long duration -- 10 years or more. The study was conducted by the American Cancer Society's Department of Epidem - by: prince_ashargin

  • Vitamin A Day - A vitamin a day: 03/03/04 - A daily multivitamin may reduce the chances of getting ill, say US researchers, who find that diabetics could gain significant benefits from a daily vitamin. The study results, reported in this month's Annals of Internal Medicine, contradict last year's Oxford study which said taking vitamins was a waste of time. In a study of just over 100 adults living in North Carolina, people taking a daily multivitamin reported less infection, such as respiratory and urinary tract infections, influenza and gastrointestinal infections, and a lower rate of illness-related absenteeism, than those receiving a placebo. Striking results among those with diabetes had a significant effect on the overall results. A group of 130 adults aged over 45 years old took a multivitamin and mineral supplement or placebo daily for one year. The multivitamin was said to contain amounts of vitamins and minerals very similar to those found in most commercially available mu - by: prince_ashargin
  • Vitamin D Study -- Protects Elderly - 02/28/03 - Vitamin D supplements can reduce fractures in elderly men and women, finds a study in this week's British Medical Journal. In a group of more than 2,500 people over 65, four-monthly supplementation with vitamin D during a five-year period reduced the incidence of fracture by 22 per cent, according to the researchers. And fractures in major osteoporotic sites dropped by 33 per cent. While researchers have already established that vitamin D along with calcium supplements helps prevent fractures in the elderly, there has been little evidence showing that vitamin D alone can have an effect. However scientists are beginning to attribute increasing importance to the role of the vitamin in bone health. Ashargin - by: prince_ashargin

Vitamin for vitamin, its nutritional value is almost as high as that of spinach (which, according to USDA, tops the veggie list). In 1816, Emanuel Merck took over the pharmacy. Thanks to his good scientific education his efforts in the pharmacy laboratory in isolating and characterizing alkaloids were crowned with success. He started with manufacture of these substances "in bulk" in 1827 by offering a "Cabinet of Pharmaceutical and Chemical Innovations" for sale. Do some investigative research where there are large Oats stores and no Whole Foods. That will tell you where the Whole Foods real estate people are looking for property. The only shot Oats has is to sell out to a big conglomerate who can absorb the losses, then use their strength to do to WFMI what WFMI is doing to Oats.
